Planning Checklist
1. The first step is to form a committee of enthusiastic people. Be sure to include some students on your committee - some terrific ideas come from some very young children!
2. Review the suggestions in this Idea File.
3. Include your principal in the initial planning. He/she can give excellent suggestions on what may be meaningful to staff as well as on how activities can be handled within the school.
4. Choose the events that your Home and School Association/School Council want to do and determine on which day each event will take place.
5. Begin a publicity campaign by contacting your local media for opportunities to promote the Week.
6. Prepare notices to inform parents of opportunities to become involved in the celebration. If possible, recruit one parent to coordinate things for each class. Be sure to follow up your first notice with a second one and include a time line so that parents will know what is expected of them.
7. Display posters in local businesses, the library, recreation center, post office, etc. Be sure to put up notices about the Appreciation Day Tea.
8. Intensify the publicity campaign by sending a public service announcement (psa) to your local radio station(s).
9. Ask the local School Board for letters of appreciation.
10. Issue a press release about your Home and School Association’s/School Council’s plans.
11. Have room representatives collect letters of appreciation from parents.
12. Prepare raffle tickets with the winner receiving donated prizes from local merchants.
13. Check with members coordinating each day’s activities. Make sure all preparations are appropriate and complete.
14. Arrange for parents to do playground supervision so that all staff members are able to attend special events such as luncheons.
15. It is important to continue teacher/staff support activities year round.
